The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps overweight adults at risk for type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Research has shown that the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% overall, and by 71% among adults aged 60 years or older. 

During this year-long program, participants meet for 1-hour per week in a small group class with a certified lifestyle coach. The coach provides the tools and support to facilitate sustainable behavior changes, including healthier eating and increased physical activity.

To help reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes, your goals throughout the program are to:
• Lose 7% of your body weight and
• Increase your physical activity to 150 minutes per week

To participate in the program, you must fit all three of these criteria: 

  • At least 18 years old
  • Overweight (BMI > 25)
  • At high risk for developing type 2 diabetes as indicated by a confirmatory blood value, pre-diabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes during previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score.


Once you qualify for the program, the enrollment into the class will require payment of the program fee and selection of your class preference from the available dates, times, and locations.
