Kids & Teens Swim & Aquatics > Swim Lessons – Kids to Teens (Ages 6 years and up)

1. Polliwog (Ages 6 & Up)

Instructional swimming without a waist support. This class is designed for the beginner swimmer who will swim in shallow and deep water with emphasis on endurance, back and front float, flutter kick, paddle stroke, and personal water safety.

2. Guppy (Ages 6 & Up)

This class is designed for the swimmer who has learned front crawl with rotary breathing and can switch from their front to their back (back float) while swimming 25 yards. Emphasis will be on front crawl, back strokes, side swimming, kneeling dives, endurance, and personal water safety.

3. Minnow (Ages 6 & Up)

This class is designed for the swimmer who can swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing and backstroke. Minnows will work on their personal safety skills, and increasing endurance with front crawl, rotary breathing and back stroke. This level introduces sidestroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and standing dives.

4. Fish (Ages 6 & Up)

This class is designed for the swimmer who can swim 50 yards of the front crawl stroke, back crawl stroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke. The Fish will work on increasing endurance, fundamentals of all strokes along with underwater swimming, and personal safety skills. Introduces the dolphin kick for the butterfly stroke.

5. Flying Fish (Ages 6 & Up)

This class is designed for the swimmer who can complete 100 yards of front crawl stroke and back crawl stroke, 50 yards of breaststroke, and 50 yards of elementary backstroke. The class will review front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke. Introduces dolphin kick and butterfly, while developing individual medley skills, starts, and turns.

6. Shark (Ages 6 & Up)

Swimmer must be able to complete a 200 yard individual medley. Swimmer will learn lifesaving strokes, competitive strokes and will review all swim skills; including further development of butterfly stroke.

7. Porpoise Club (Ages 11-15)

This club is for youths who have completed the YMCA swim levels through Shark (ages 11–15). This class will enhance their existing skills and teach them more including: Lifesaving skills, personal safety and personal growth, competitive skills, snorkeling/skin diving, water sports, and volunteering opportunities.

Learn to Swim

YMCA Learn To Swim program offers free introductory swim lessons to Hartford children ages 5-9. Swim lessons are located at the Downtown YMCA in Hartford or the Learning Corridor in Hartford. Proof of Hartford residency is required.

Progressive Lessons

6 Week training session with Sarah or Alycia for comepetitive swimmers interested in growing their skills to eventually make swim team.
Requirements: Must be able to swim down and back in lap pool

School Age Swim Ages 6 -14 years

Participants will be swim tested the first day and then placed in a class that meets their needs. The instructors are all trained for these levels.

Stroke Development (Level 5)

In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all the major swim strokes are introduced.

Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to front crawl and back crawl 25yds, (2) able to swim breaststroke kick and dolphin kick 15yds, (3) able to tread water using multiple kicks for 1 minute.

Stroke Introduction (Level 4)

In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all the major competitive strokes are introduced.

Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water, (2) able to swim front crawl 15yds while taking a breath, (3) able to Swim-Float-Swim 15yds, (4) able to jump in and tread water for 30 seconds, (5) able to swim to wall and exit.

Stroke Mechanics

In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced.Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to swim front crawl with bent arm recovery and rotary breathing for 25yds, (2) able to swim back crawl with stroke rotation for 25yds, (3) able to swim butterfly with overarm recovery, (4) able to swim breastroke for 25yds achieving stroke rhythm, (5) able to dive from a kneeling position.

Stroke Mechanics (Level 6)

In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced.
Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to swim front crawl with bent arm recovery and rotary breathing for 25yds, (2) able to swim back crawl with stroke rotation for 25yds, (3) able to swim butterfly with overarm recovery, (4) able to swim breastroke for 25yds achieving stroke rhythm, (5) able to dive from a kneeling position.

Swim Buddies ( Ages 5 - 14)

Swim Buddies is an adaptive swim lesson program specially modified for children ages 5-13 years old that have behavioral, developmental, or physical.  Lessons include water acclimation, instruction on floating, stroke development, as well as water safety.

Teen Beginner Swim Lessons

Students will develop comfort in the water. They will learn how to swim-float-swim, front glides, back floats, and exits. Students will also work on jump, push, turn, grab.

Teen Intermediate Lesson (Ages 13-17)

Students will learn basic strokes including, front crawl and backstroke.

Water Acclimation (Level 1)

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Water Movement (Level 2)

In this class, children are taught skills that focus on buoyancy and movement in the water while also learning how to safely exit in the event of fall into a body of water.

Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to go underwater and comfortably open eyes without goggles, (2) able to float on front and back with minimal assistance, (3) able to jump in the pool,  submerge and return to the wall with assistance.

Water Stamina (Level 3)

In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances.  In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety.

Qualifications to be in this level: (1) able to float on front and back unassisted, (2) able to push off wall on stomach with face submerged for 10ft unassisted, (3) able to Swim-Float-Swim 15ft unassisted, (4) able to jump into deep water and return to the wall unassisted.

Youth Swim Lessons

In an effort to make registration easier, all you have to do is choose the age group and the time you'd like to come to class - we will separate all swimmers according to their swim levels and we will track and monitor their progression.
