Woodstock’s New Yurt City

Camp Woodstock’s commitment to teen leadership is evident in our latest project: New Yurt City. Our dream is to construct a village of yurts near the present archery range for our oldest campers in the summer, as well as for urban youth retreats throughout the year. We hope to raise the $250,000 necessary to construct New Yurt City over the next two years. The village will consist of two sleeping yurts and a meeting yurt connected by an elevated walkway. A bathhouse, high ropes course and pontoon boat to cross the lake to main camp are included in the plans.

Wondering what a yurt is? Imagine a polished wood floor beneath a canvass dome with windows and skylights affording views of trees during the day and stars by night. Now, imagine wooden bunks and comfortable furniture. In the summer, imagine twenty-four teens learning leadership and life skills as a prelude to the LIT program the following year. In the “off season”, imagine urban and suburban teens learning to be leaders together for their schools and their communities. You have just imagined New Yurt City.
