The YMCA of Greater Hartford is a non-profit charitable organization recognized by the IRS with 501 ( c) (3) status. The YMCA of Greater Hartford currently serves over 108,000 individuals, including 65,000 children in 44 communities across the region. The YMCA strives to serve all regardless of ability to pay. All YMCA programs emphasize our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and utilize the forty development assets defined by the Search Institute of Minneapolis to build leadership and positive values.
The YMCA of Greater Hartford began a three-year capital campaign to raise capital dollars for a new YMCA Youth and Family Center in North Hartford and an Eastern Regional YMCA in Ellington, Ct.
In many North Hartford neighborhoods, more than half the households live at or below the poverty line. Children under 18 make up slightly more than 30% of the population. Two-thirds of neighborhood adults lack a high school diploma or have not finished 8th grade. Even more disturbing, many of Hartford’s neighborhoods have been plagued by gun violence- underscoring the urgent need for a safe haven.
The YMCA of Greater Hartford is building a new YMCA Youth and Family Center on Albany Avenue and Brook Streets in North Hartford. The new YMCA will offer life-changing experiences that will serve 4-6,000 additional people the first year alone. Moms and Dads will be able to take parenting skills classes—courses that nearly 80% of the neighborhoods’ parents said were needed to become a better parent. Children, families, older adults and people of all ages will have the opportunity to spend more time with one another in numerous programs and positive activities that help them grow closer, safer, and develop self esteem and leadership skills. The YMCA is collaborating with the Urban League of Greater Hartford and Community Health Services to provide one-stop human services and activities for North Hartford neighborhoods.

The area east of the Connecticut River is the fastest-growing region of the sate: towns including Ellington, Vernon, Manchester, South Windsor, Somers, Tolland, Enfield, Coventry and other communities will be served. This facility will be the first YMCA full facility east of the river.
The Indian Valley YMCA is already the largest provider of child care and development in the area. But the demand for YMCA services just keeps expanding. This small facility and rented space simply can’t accommodate the full spectrum of community needs.
It is anticipated, through market studies, that the Eastern Regional YMCA Family and Community Center will quickly become the region’s family destination, serving over 12,000 children and families the first year alone. A year-round swimming pool will enable hundreds of children to learn to swim and learn through a variety of water safety classes. Their grandparents will receive relief from arthritis, thanks to water aerobics. People of all ages will improve their health and wellness, supported by caring, trained YMCA staff. For personal growth, pre-teens and teens will learn leadership lessons in YMCA programs such as Youth and Government and Leaders Clubs. Above all, they can depend upon YMCA positive adult role models to help them gain skills, self-esteem and leadership capabilities.
