HARTFORD, CT— The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded a $300,000 grant to the YMCA of Greater Hartford for the construction of the New North Hartford YMCA Family and Community Center, of which $100,000 was granted to the Urban League of Greater Hartford and Community Health Services, Inc. (CHS) for collaborative programming.
While all three agencies already provide services to residents of North Hartford, this collaboration will provide not only YMCA programming, but additional community services, education, youth and family development, and community health services to residents of Clay Arsenal, Upper Albany, and Northeast neighborhoods.
"This grant from Bank of America will help keep the YMCA moving forward with our commitment to serve the neighborhoods of Hartford. It’s an opportunity to be a part of the North Hartford community and working closely with our neighbors, the Urban League of Greater Hartford and Community Health Services. It’s all about collaboration, children, families, neighborhoods and communities,” said Kevin Washington, President and CEO, YMCA of Greater Hartford.
Susan A. Rottner, Connecticut President for Bank of America, said, “We are proud to support the YMCA not only in bringing a new facility to Albany Avenue, but in creating a collaboration with the Urban League of Greater Hartford and Community Health Services. Bank of America takes its responsibilities to the Hartford community very seriously and we are pleased this effort will make our city a better place to live."
The new YMCA facility will be constructed adjacent to CHS’s exisiting location, and the Urban League of Greater Hartford will create a satellite for its Woodland Avenue office on the second floor of the new YMCA facility—creating an operation center in the neighborhood it primariliy serves. Construction of the North Hartford YMCA is anticipated to begin later this year or early 2008.
With the establishment of the new North Hartford YMCA Family and Community Center, the three organizations will be the largest community service organizations serving the Clay Arsenal and Upper Albany and other North Hartford neighborhoods.
The YMCA builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
