Prudential Financial donates $250,000 to the YMCA of Greater Hartford for its North Hartford expansion

New North Hartford YMCA Youth and Family Community Center planned on Albany Avenue

October 9, 2007

HARTFORD, CT – Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU) has awarded a $250,000 gift to the YMCA of Greater Hartford for the construction of its New North Hartford YMCA Youth and Family Community Center, that will be a 45,000 sq. ft. center serving Hartford’s Clay/Arsenal and Upper Albany Avenue neighborhoods, and all the neighborhoods of Hartford. The initiative will include collaboration with Community Health Services, Inc., the Urban League of Greater Hartford and the City of Hartford to provide multiple levels of programming for families. It will serve as a community center for residents in the area.

Kevin Washington, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford accepted the gift, saying “This generous gift from Prudential Financial helps make it possible for the YMCA to bring a state-of-the-art YMCA facility to North Hartford to provide traditional recreational benefits, but also programs like child enrichment, a teen center, our ‘Read to Succeed’ literacy program, and a ‘town green’ style community center. Our collaboration with our neighbors, Community Health Services and the Urban League, will provide even more services to our families.”

"The YMCA’s efforts to physically enhance the North Hartford community and bring much needed services to its residents, reflects our commitment to greater Hartford and to revitalizing communities across the country where we live and do business,” said Christine Marcks, president, Prudential Retirement, which is headquartered in Hartford and employs approximately 650 people in the Greater Hartford community. “In a real sense, it’s our duty as a committed corporate citizen,” she added.

The YMCA has conducted studies confirming that its new YMCA facility and services are both needed and wanted by North Hartford residents. The new YMCA facility will be constructed adjacent to the Community Health Center, at Albany Avenue and Brook Street. Construction is anticipated to begin later this year or early 2008.

The YMCA builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Christine Marcks, president of Hartford-based Prudential Retirement, presents a $250,000 check to Kevin Washington, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford at the YMCA’s metropolitan offices in Hartford on October 8. The donation from Prudential Financial will aid the construction of a New North Hartford YMCA Youth and Family Community Center that will serve North Hartford neighborhoods. Located at Albany Avenue and Brook Street, the new Center will provide services in collaboration with its neighbor Community Health Services, Inc. and the Urban League of Greater Hartford, which will have space in the new facility.
