December 22, 2007
HARTFORD, CT— The Comcast Foundation has awarded an $11,000 grant to the YMCA of Greater Hartford for its Minority Achievers Program, a mentoring program that pairs students with Adult Achievers from area corporations and businesses, to prepare them for the workforce of tomorrow. The funds will be used for program costs including supplies, equipment, scholarships for students, and transportation for participating families to the program’s home at Capital Community College.
This year’s Comcast Foundation grant brings the company’s cumulative support of the Minority Achievers program to over $50,000. "Comcast is committed to giving back to and enriching the communities where our customers and employees live and work," said Doug Guthrie, Comcast Regional Vice President -CT-West. "We are proud to support programs like the YMCA's Minority Achievers program, as it provides children with exposure to positive role models."
“Comcast’s ongoing support of the Minority Achievers Program helps the YMCA deliver services to young people and their families who might not otherwise have access to our programs,” says Kevin Washington, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford, “A significant part of the program is the engagement of parents in the process. We call them Parent Achievers.”
While students in the Minority Achievers Program participate in life skills and leadership workshops and service learning projects, their adult family members engage in enrichment workshops designed to help them learn more about secondary and college admissions and other leadership and educational opportunities.
