Programs and Swim Lessons

Registration for ALL summer swim lessons starts Monday May 12, 2008 for facility members and May 19th for program members.

Camp Chase Summer Swim Lessons Session Dates:

Camp Chase Saturday Session: June 21 – August 2 (no classes Saturday, July 5)

  1. Camp Chase Summer Swim Lessons run for 30 minutes each day (Monday - Thursday) for 2 weeks (except Saturday classes will run for 40 minutes for six weeks) .
  2. Make ups for classes cancelled due to inclement weather will be held on Fridays during the above session dates.

The purpose of YMCA swim lessons is to help develop a lifelong love of the water with competency, confidence, and endurance in swimming. In addition to learning stroke mechanics, we also teach Personal Safety, Water Sports, Games and Character Development.

3 Swimming Kids

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS

Ages 3 to 5 years
Pike This class starts at the very beginning for children who are at least 3 years old. All the basic skills are covered: supported floats, kicking, blowing bubbles, “reaching and pulling”, and assists.
Prerequisite: Students must be able to take and follow directions

Eel: Participants continue building on the Pike level skills until they can swim comfortably on their fronts and backs for 25 feet, retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool, jump into the pool, and fl oat unassisted on front & back.
Prerequisite: Must be comfortable in the water and able to swim 5 feet on their own.

Ray/Starfish: Participants are introduced to the fundamentals of the formal strokes: alternating over-arm action with side/rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and kneeling dives.
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable fully submerged underwater, floating and swimming on front, back, and side for 15 feet without any assistance.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS

Ages 6 – 15
Polliwog This class starts at the very beginning for children who are at least 6 years old. All the basic skills are covered for participants to be comfortable and competent at swimming unassisted on their front and back and at going under water.
Prerequisite: None.

Guppy: Participants are introduced to the fundamentals of the formal strokes: front crawl with side/rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breast stroke, sidestroke and kneeling dives.
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable going underwater, floating and paddling on front back, and side without a flotation device.

Minnow: Front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke are refined, breast stroke and sidestroke kicks are introduced along with diving.
Prerequisite: front and back floats without a flotation device, crawl stroke (back & front) 15 yards without a flotation device, comfortable in deep water.

Fish: Strokes are refined over longer distances (50 yards) with more emphasis on technique and turns. Butterfly stroke and springboard diving are introduced.
Prerequisite: Able to swim 25 yards of the following: front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and side stroke; standing dive from pool edge and able to jump off diving board.

Flying Fish: Participants strengthen strokes and build endurance. Strokes are performed proficiently for 100 yards with turns. Bilateral breathing for the front crawl is introduced.
Prerequisite: front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke 50 yards each; butterfly 15 yards, tread water 3 minutes and able to surface dive down 6 to 8 feet.

Shark: Students will develop proficiency in and strengthen breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, and stroke variations, such as trudgeon crawl. Flip turns and the individual medley with starts are also practiced.
Prerequisites: Front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and sidestroke in good form for 100 yards each, butterfly in good form for 25 yards.

Private Swim Lessons

The Farmington Valley YMCA offers an alternative to group swim lessons with our Private Swim Instruction. You can have individual or semi-group private lessons built around your busy schedule. 24 HOURS NOTICE IS REQUIRED FOR ANY CANCELLATIONS. These are ideal to special needs or individualized attention. Please note that semi-private group lessons are only available in packages of 5 lessons.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Lifeguard Training Course at YMCA Camp Chase
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid (both 3 year certifications) and ARC CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (1 year certification). It is strongly recommended that participants be ready to demonstrate the prerequisites listed below by the first day of class or they will not be able to continue. Minimum age for certification: must be 15 by the end of the course.

Course Prerequisites:
300 yard continuous swim (100 yd. front crawl, 100 yd. breaststroke, and 100 yd. Choice). The swim must be non-stop but there is no time limit. Swim 20 yards, retrieve 10 pound brick from a minimum depth of 7 feet, and carry it while swimming 20 yards.

Spring Session 1:
Wednesdays 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. AND Saturdays 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 Noon.

Starts Wednesday, June 25th at YMCA Camp Chase
