YMCA Youth and Government
The YMCA Connecticut Youth and Government Program is
an experience in the State of
Connecticut
’s legislative, legal, and
journalistic process. The process of developing ideas into legislation through
writing bills, caucusing, meeting with committees, debating bills, lobbying,
reporting on the process, voting on referendums, and electing officers are all
part of the total program. Through this program, high school students actually
experience the State Legislative process. Through Youth and Government,
participants learn how our system of Government works, how it can be modified
and used to achieve the goals of human dignity and to experience the personal
empowerment of our democratic process. The knowledge gained may help to
motivate some to enter politics or government service, and to be interested,
involved and more effective citizens. YMCA Youth and Government teach the
responsibility of freedom through personal experience. Youth and Government
provides the YMCA with the opportunity to influence the future leaders and
citizens of our country. If we expect future generations to uphold the values,
ethics and moral integrity we advocate, we must assume responsibility for
teaching those virtues today to the young people who will guide our nation
tomorrow.
